VDE needle-nose pliers with straight tip (IEC 60900)

Protective insulation up to 1000V AC ✓ According to DIN 5745 ✓ Chrome vanadium steel ✓

Our Högert VDE needle nose pliers in a straight design meet the requirements of DIN 5745 and feature a tapered tip and a side cutter. The insulated needle nose pliers are available in two different sizes with a total length of 160mm or 200mm. In addition to the length, the designs of the pliers jaws also differ, since the larger version also has a flat, coarsely serrated burner hole for powerful gripping and holding, which is located between the flat jaws and the side cutter. Thus, these are basically combination pliers with an elongated tip, which are used extremely versatile as gripping and cutting tools in countless applications. The flat jaws have a fine serration for a firm, secure grip when bending, pulling and holding components, cables and wires. The insulated VDE needle nose pliers with straight tips and high-visibility red-yellow handles are an indispensable gripping and cutting tool for electricians, mechatronics engineers and electronic technicians, as well as countless other trades where working with electricity cannot be ruled out.

The VDE-tested pointed pliers are made of an equally high-quality chrome-vanadium alloy, with plastic-coated handles. These consist of a two-component PVC that contributes equally to a pleasant feel thanks to the softer, yellow component and to the necessary insulation against voltages of up to 1,000V AC (or 1,500V DC) according to IEC 60900. The generously designed collars at the front end of the handles help to prevent slipping and increase safety when working on live installations.

Properties of the straight flat-nose pliers with protective insulation

VDE needle-nose pliers with straight tips are also commonly referred to as long-nosed pliers. These pliers are so named because of their long, pointed gripping jaws, which allow for very precise gripping, shaping and bending. Strictly speaking, our flat-round nose pliers are actually combination pliers with long gripping surfaces that have a rounded conical shape on the outside. The inside of the gripping surfaces has a finely grooved surface to ensure a secure hold when gripping, guiding and pulling. In addition, the pliers have a laterally arranged cutting edge that is located as close as possible to the pliers joint for optimal power transmission and effortless cutting of cables, individual wires, wire, plastic or wood without the need for great force. This cutting edge is specially hardened and can even cut through fine materials such as film, cloth, cord or sewing thread. The large version of the VDE needle nose pliers also has coarse gripping teeth in the centre, which are arranged flat to each other in a so-called burner hole and are perfect for coarse materials and an extremely secure non-slip grip. Overall, the VDE pliers have a stronger, more robust design of the gripping jaws than our flat-round nose pliers without protective insulation.

In addition to the design of the pliers jaws, the handles play a crucial role in terms of safety and handling. In the case of the VDE needle nose pliers, the handles are not only ergonomic but also have a very important function. The handles must provide a sufficiently high level of protection against electrical voltage, which is subject to very strict testing standards. The red-yellow PVC handles combine these properties, as the handles not only provide protective insulation against voltages of up to 1,000 volts AC or 1,500 volts DC in accordance with DIN EN IEC 60900 for insulated hand tools for use when working with live voltage. The use of a hard component in red and a softer component also makes the handle feel very pleasant and contributes significantly to the ergonomics and fatigue-free working with the VDE needle nose pliers. The large flared collars towards the front of the handles prevent slipping and thus also contact with the uninsulated pliers jaws, which significantly increases safety when working on live lines and systems.

As a tool that is primarily aimed at professional users in industry and trade in a wide range of sectors, the pliers not only meet the applicable DIN standards and approvals, but are also manufactured to an exceptionally high quality from the highest quality materials. An alloyed chrome-vanadium steel is used for the pliers, which is also extra hardened in the area of the pliers jaws to meet the rough operating conditions on construction sites, without sacrificing function and appearance. With a material hardness of 55-60 HRC (Rockwell hardness grade), the pliers are therefore also suitable for cutting thicker copper wires or iron wire without fear of notching the cutting surfaces.

Use and care of flat pliers

Our long-nosed pliers are true multifunctional tools that enable precise gripping, holding and guiding thanks to the long conical tips. The conically rounded outer side of the long gripping jaws can be very useful when bending wires and individual veins, and thus contribute to clean and clear wiring in electrical devices, systems and control cabinets. The integrated side cutter effortlessly cuts wires, cables and plastic welding rods, and is also sharp enough to cut thread or yarn. The cutting surfaces of the wedge-shaped cutting edges are precisely milled and specially hardened for maximum durability, so that even thicker individual copper wires or rods can be cut effortlessly. The very small bevel on the outside allows a largely flush cut.

Whereas the larger pliers are used primarily in domestic electrical work and in plant construction for wiring control and switch cabinets, fuse boxes, switches and sockets for larger cable cross-sections, the smaller flat-round pliers are very suitable for areas where filigree components have to be positioned with the utmost precision due to their compact dimensions. For example, it is much easier to position fine resistors and capacitors on a circuit board for soldering with the small pliers. For the same reason, the more compact pliers are also used more frequently in network technology, radio and television technology, as well as for terminating telephone and internet lines with a very small cable cross-section.

NOTE:The symmetrical jaws are differently configured in the two available sizes. While the 160mm tongs have tapered jaws with fine cross-grooves and a lateral cutting edge, the 200mm tongs also have a straight burner hole with coarse serration between the faceted cutting edge and the flat tip. The serration, which allows for more powerful gripping and pulling, is quite sharp, so a cloth or other suitable protective covering should be used on sensitive surfaces to avoid nicks and scratches on metallic or painted materials.

Even if you don't necessarily need pliers insulated up to 1,000 volts according to IEC 60900 for DIY and handicrafts, these are also very suitable for all other hobby and DIY areas due to their ergonomic and non-slip handles. The advantages of these pliers are demonstrated by the bending of fine eyelets for jewellery making, the positioning of small objects in model making or the creation of the currently very popular thread paintings, in which fine yarn or thin wire is threaded around tiny nails. For tying flowers and flower arrangements with florist's wire, as well as for erecting an enclosure with fine rabbit wire or even robust chicken wire to make it more difficult for your beloved pet to escape, flat-round nose pliers are also an excellent choice.

Examples of use for the VDE long-handled round-nosed pliers with straight tip

  • Thanks to the long tip, even low-lying wires in the control box can be easily gripped
  • The insulated handles provide safety when working on electrical systems, devices and electric vehicles
  • The side cutter is useful for shortening conductors when no VDE side cutter is available
  • The conically rounded outer side of the gripper jaws allows single conductors to be bent very precisely
  • The fine tip of the insulated pliers is ideal for gripping and positioning printed circuit board components

NOTE: In contrast to the blue long nose pliers according to DIN 5745 , the Högert VDE long-handled needle-nose pliers with straight tip have protective insulation up to 1,000V AC or 1,500 DC according to DIN EN IEC 60900 and are suitable for working on electrical systems.
