Aluminium U-profiles in black (RAL9005) for edging

Robust powder coating ✓ UV & weather-resistant ✓ Corrosion-resistant ✓

Our aluminium U-profiles in deep black (RAL 9005) are available in clamping thicknesses of 3mm, 6mm and 8mm. The profiles are also available in the standard length of two metres and cut to one metre at affordable prices. The profiles, which can be used for countless indoor and outdoor applications, are perfectly matched to our façade panels made of HPL laminate to ensure unobtrusive installation of panels and profiles. The black profile is also very suitable for wall and floor coverings in black or very dark grey tones and creates a perfect look with a clean, straight finish.

The extruded profiles combine a very low weight, which is due to the profile thickness of just 1.1mm, with a high inherent rigidity. This is made possible by the use of a high-quality EN AW 6063 T6 aluminium alloy, which is also characterised by its extremely high resistance to weathering. The advantage of the low thickness is not only that the thin aluminium can be easily sawn by hand, but also that it is much more visually appealing, as the protrusion from the profile to the panel surface is hardly noticeable. In addition, cleaning the façade panels is also much easier because hardly any dirt collects in the delicate transition and can be easily removed with a soft cloth.

NOTE: End profiles in black with a powder coating instead of a black anodised finish are rare and are manufactured especially for us. The U-profiles, like all our optical façade profiles, are available in the clamping ranges 3mm, 6mm and 8mm in the production length of 2 metres, as well as cut to a length of one metre. We also offer matching H-profiles in deep black for connecting two panels in an identical selection of lengths and clamping ranges.

Properties of the U-profile with powder coating in black

The powder-coated U-shaped profiles are manufactured using an extrusion process and then powder-coated all round in black (RAL 9005). This not only creates an even, silky gloss surface, but also has a positive effect on outdoor use, as the UV and weather resistance, which is already extremely good for aluminium in an EN AW 6063 T6 alloy, is further improved. As a façade profile, which is primarily used for exterior façade cladding, for example with HPL or Alu-Dibond®, these are very important properties. The colour tone and the intensity of the surface gloss are precisely matched to our black HPL panels when cut to size, which ensures that installation is as visually invisible as possible. The profile thickness of 1.1mm also contributes to a homogeneous overall appearance, as the transition from the panel surface to the profile is very small, but also has sufficient thickness for very good bending and torsional rigidity.

Our façade profiles are manufactured ex works in a length of 2005mm. This includes a plus tolerance of 5mm so that the length never falls below 2 metres. The clamping area also has a plus tolerance. This is 0.5mm, but is not due to the production process of the profiles, but to the thickness tolerance of the panels. Depending on the material and manufacturer, the panel thickness may vary slightly. A little leeway is required so that the profiles can be fitted to a panel edge of the nominal thickness at any time. This means that the maximum possible clamping range of a 3mm U-profile is 3.5mm. With a 6mm profile, the maximum panel thickness is 6.5mm. A panel with a nominal thickness of 8mm may be a maximum of 8.5mm thick so that the maximum clamping range of the 8mm end profile is not exceeded at 8.5mm.

U-profiles are used to cover cut edges for a perfect edge finish. To do this, they are either simply pushed over the edge of the panel or additionally screwed or glued. To ensure that gluing or screwing is possible without any problems, our black edging profiles have a wide side that serves as a mounting surface. This has a width of 20mm on the outside and 18.9mm on the inside. The narrower visible side, on the other hand, is only 12mm wide. However, as the profiles are completely powder-coated in black, it makes no difference which of the two sides is used as the visible side, so personal taste is the deciding factor here. The quality of the powder coating, as well as the dimensional accuracy, is guaranteed by our German manufacturer, who produces the profiles for us according to our design drawings, taking into account the EN 12020 standard (extruded precision profiles made of alloys EN AW-6060 and EN AW-6063).

Specific data for the different profile sizes

  • Alu U-Profile 6mm: Clamping range: max. 6.5mm, profile depth outside: 8.7mm, weight: 114g/m
  • Alu U-Profile 8mm: Clamping range: max. 8.5mm, profile depth outside: 10.7mm, weight: 120g/m

Application and installation of the aluminium U-profiles in black

In addition to our black HPL panels made to measure, we have the aluminium end profiles manufactured in exactly the same colour with an identical gloss level. Thanks to the durable, UV and weather-resistant powder coating, it is suitable for long-term outdoor use, which is common for façade cladding, without having to worry about the deep black colour fading. The profiles are simply slipped over the cut edges of the HPL panels in the appropriate thickness and thus conceal the fine splinters that cannot always be completely avoided when sawing the hard laminate panels. Of course, the profiles are also suitable for countless other applications, for example as a finish for floor coverings, skirting boards or for neatly demarcating wall tiles. As long as the clamping range is taken into account, which for our black edging profiles is either 3mm, 6mm or 8mm, there are no limits to creativity when using the profiles.

TIP: The black U-profiles can be ordered in both 1000mm and 2000mm lengths. It is extremely rare for these dimensions to correspond exactly to requirements and for the profiles to need to be cut to size. Shortening, whether straight or mitred, is therefore usually unavoidable, but does not require a great deal of manual skill or the necessary tools. An ordinary hand saw is sufficient to cut the aluminium end profiles. Cutting with a mitre saw is somewhat easier and more precise.

Additional fixing is not intended for the main use of the profiles, namely as a visual enhancement of finishing edges in vertical façade systems in exterior areas. Instead, gluing or screwing can even have a negative effect on the constraint-free installation of façade panels made of HPL, as the expansion capacity can be impaired. For interior applications, where high temperature fluctuations are less to be expected, panel expansion is usually negligible. If the profiles are used, for example, to finish off partition walls or for glazing in shower cubicles, bonding with a coloured or transparent MS polymer prevents the edge profiles from coming loose. For this purpose, an inconspicuous indentation is made on the inside of the mounting surface, which extends over the entire length. This serves the purpose of making it easier to apply the power adhesive by using the groove as a guide and also improves the joining of the otherwise smooth surfaces of the profile and the panel to which it is attached. The groove is also a good aid for screwing, as the distance to the edge is selected in such a way that the risk of chipping towards the edge of the panel is minimised when drilling and screwing the panel in place. However, the U-profiles are not pre-drilled, so a small HSS drill with a cordless screwdriver is required. When choosing the screws, make sure that their length does not exceed the clamping area so that the screw does not protrude on the other side of the panel and pose a potential risk of injury.

Application examples of our black aluminium end profiles
