Our cap nut with M5 internal thread in the high design complies with DIN 1587 and is made of stainless steel. The total height of the nut is 14mm. The spanner size of the hexagon nut is 8mm, so that the nut can be loosened and tightened with any standard spanner or ratchet with a long socket of the appropriate size. As a fastener for balcony surrounds, a permanently tight, secure screw connection is required that will not loosen due to impact or vibration. A special thread locker consisting of a microencapsulating two-component adhesive ensures a lasting screw lock, in which tiny glass beads break when the screw is screwed in, containing the hardener of the adhesive and thus initiating the chemical hardening process.
NOTE: Balcony screw sets with cap nut are always supplied with a cap nut, regardless of colour and length. In addition, the set contains a self-adhesive poly washer, a washer and a spring washer. In the sets with threaded sleeve, the screw is screwed into the sleeve instead of being fastened with a cap nut.
The cap nuts are needed when a balcony screw connection has been loosened, because the thread adhesive, which consists of two components, only hardens once. Therefore, after loosening, a permanently secure fastening of the nut cannot be guaranteed, so that it must be replaced. Alternatively, some thread locking varnish can be applied to the thread of the screw. In addition, we also sell the balcony screws individually and not only as a complete set, so that the cap nuts can be ordered directly with them if desired. As with all our assembly materials, the self-locking cap nuts made of stainless steel can be purchased in any quantity.
The cap nut is manufactured according to DIN 1587 "Hexagon cap nuts, high form". In contrast to conventional cap nuts, this one is significantly longer in design so that the nut can be screwed further onto the thread of the balcony screw. However, the nut with an internal thread in size M5 is not only suitable for our balcony screws, but can be used with any screw with a metric M5 thread. To enable outdoor use, the nuts are made of a rustproof stainless steel. Especially as a fastener for balcony surrounds, stair guardrails or privacy walls outdoors with our balcony screws, good corrosion resistance is required, which is guaranteed by the high-quality A2 steel alloy.
The screw lock on the internal thread of the nut prevents the unintentional loosening or loosening of a screw connection. This is a special microencapsulating 2-component adhesive in which tiny glass beads contain the hardener. When the threaded screws are screwed in, the beads burst and initiate chemical curing. After a short time of reactive hardening, loosening of the cap nut due to vibrations is impossible. Because the chemical process can only be activated once, the cap nut is no longer considered self-locking after loosening and should be replaced with a new cap nut. This is the only way to ensure that the thread locker is intact and permanent.
The M5 internal thread of a cap nut is limited by the closed design, so that the screw-in depth of the screw is at most 7mm. In order for the screw connection to be adequately executed, on the other hand, the nut should be screwed onto the thread of the screw by at least 4 - 5mm. Especially with balcony screws that have different thread lengths, the clamping range is significant. The thickness of the panels, substructure, washers and spring washers, as well as the screw-in depth in the cap nut must be taken into account in order to determine the correct length of the screw.
A cap nut, like any other nut, is screwed onto the thread of a threaded screw and thus provides a fixation for the screw fastening. In most cases, a washer is used to increase the small contact area of a nut so that the load is better distributed on the mounting surface and the nut does not press into the material. The main difference between a cap nut and a normal hexagon nut is that the cap nut is closed and covers the screw thread like a hat. As a result, the screw can only be screwed into the cap nut until the thread depth is reached, whereas a conventional nut can be screwed onto the thread of a screw as far as desired. With the cap nuts of our balcony screws, we deliberately use an extended design with a total height of 14mm, which allows a screw-in depth of 4mm to 7mm. This gives a little more leeway when it comes to choosing the right balcony screw for the installation of balcony edgings.
It should be noted that for most fastenings with screws and nuts, assembly must be carried out from both sides. On one side, the screw must be locked with a suitable screwdriver so that the screw does not turn when the nut is tightened. On the other side, the nut must be tightened with a spanner or socket spanner. It is also not surprising that the cap nut cannot be screwed onto the thread by hand. This is due to the thread locker, where the blue thread adhesive causes the thread to constrict.
