Cylinder head screw made of high-strength carbon steel

Nickel-plated steel ✓ Hexagon socket drive ✓ Versatile ✓

Our nickel-plated steel cylinder head screws with metric thread are available in a range of designs with different thread diameters and thread lengths at attractive graduated prices. Our range includes screws with M5, M6 or M8 threads. The length varies depending on the diameter and ranges from 20mm to 80mm. The cylindrical screw head, which is typical for these screws, has a hexagon socket drive that makes it easy to work with the screws. This modern drive allows for very high tightening torques of the screw connection with little effort.

Our cylinder head screws are made of robust carbon steel, which gives them a high tensile and shear strength. This makes the screws ideal for applications where high-strength, resilient screw connections are required. Thanks to the nickel coating, which contributes to improved corrosion resistance, the threaded screws can also be used outdoors and in humid environments.

NOTE: The information on the size of the screw refers to the thread size. The total length of the screw is the length of the thread plus the height of the screw head. For an M5x20mm cylinder screw, 4.5mm must therefore be added for the head, which means that the screw is 24.5mm long in total.

Properties of our nickel-plated cylinder head screws

Our cylinder head screws made of nickel-plated carbon steel combine excellent quality with a favourable price. These are threaded screws with a metric fine thread and a cylindrical head with a hexagon socket. Compared to slotted or cross-head screws, this drive allows for higher tightening torques without the risk of damaging the drive when screwing in the screw. The carbon steel alloy used for the manufacturing is characterised by a very good strength, so that high-strength fastenings are possible. The nickel coating offers additional protection against rust and corrosion, which significantly improves the lifespan of the screws in humid environments and in applications that are exposed to the weather.

The round, cylindrical head not only gives the screws their name, but also looks extremely appealing. Our cylinder head screws have a hexagon socket drive, which is also known to most under the brand name Inbus®. The flat surface of the screw head distributes the load over the entire surface. In combination with the more solid construction of a threaded screw, significantly higher tightening torques and tensile loads are possible than with a screw with a coarse thread with a comparable thread diameter.

The nickel-plated carbon steel cylinder head screws are ideal for our construction profiles, as the nickel coating significantly reduces the risk of contact corrosion compared to a screw made of alloyed stainless steel. The 6mm and 8mm diameter head screws are suitable for mounting profile connectors with an adjustable angle, for example, where the screws are screwed into a thread in the clearance hole. However, most aluminium construction profiles do not yet have an internal thread, but this can be easily cut using a standard tap. The shorter screws, on the other hand, are ideal for attaching handles, angle connectors or panels. For this, T-Slot Nuts with a matching internal thread are required, which are inserted into the open slot of the aluminium profile. In such cases, the maximum length of the screw is determined by the installation height of the mounting hole of the attachment part and the depth of the groove. If the screw is too long, it cannot be screwed in completely. If the thread is too short, the screw may no longer reach the internal thread of the slot nut.

Specific data for the cylinder screws

  • M5 cylinder head screw: Ø thread: 5mm, Ø head: 7.5mm, height of head: 4.5mm, drive: HEX 4
  • M6 cylinder head screw: Ø thread: 6mm, Ø head: 9.0mm, height of head: 5.6mm, drive: HEX 5
  • M8 cylinder head screw: Ø thread: 8mm, Ø head: 10.9mm, height of head: 6.7mm, drive: HEX 6

Assembly and use of cylinder head screws

Our cylinder head screws with internal hexagon drive are simply screwed into a thread of the same size using an internal hexagon spanner or a socket spanner and are ideal for high-strength connections, especially when metal objects need to be securely connected to each other using screws.

To use a cheese head screw, a suitable counterpart with a matching internal thread is required. The most common combination consists of a threaded screw and a simple hex nut, optionally with a flange or as a cap nut. This also includes drive-in sleeves with an internal thread for wood or plastic materials, as well as cavity wall anchors with a metric internal thread or metal components in which the thread is cut directly into the metal.

NOTE: The use of washers increases the bearing surface, which improves load distribution at high tightening torques. This makes it possible to achieve an even safer and more stable connection. In addition, the larger surface area prevents the screw head from being pressed into softer or more sensitive surfaces.

The nickel-plated steel cylinder screws are very well suited for constructions made of our aluminium construction profiles and are used here, for example, to fasten angle connectors, handles, hinges or profile connectors with an adjustable angle. The threaded screw is either screwed directly into the through-hole of the aluminium profile or used in combination with a suitable slot nut within the slots of this system profile.

Construction profiles are only one special example, however, and represent only a small part of the range of applications. To put it simply, cylinder head screws are always used when a high-strength and secure connection is required. These include, among others, the automotive industry, which uses the screws to fasten engine parts, body parts, or interior panels. The screws are also used very frequently in the bicycle industry, and no bicycle can do without threaded screws with cylinder heads. Here the screws are used to fasten gear and brake levers, handlebars and stems, as well as to mount disc brake callipers on forks and frames. In mechanical engineering, the screws are used for all kinds of fastenings. From small circuit board fastenings to large industrial plants, cylinder head screws are often used here. Every washing machine, every built-in oven, even every TV set has cylinder head screws. And every household also has at least one piece of furniture that is assembled with cylinder head screws. The most well-known example of this is probably the cabinets and shelves from a very well-known Swedish furniture store chain.

Examples of applications for carbon steel cylinder head bolts

  • The high tensile and shear strength makes cap screws particularly popular in plant construction
  • Cylinder head screws are used to securely fasten bicycle components such as brake calipers or handlebars
  • Cylinder head screws are ideal for mounting on aluminium construction profiles with sliding nuts
  • Cylinder head screws are used for furniture, e.g. that of a Swedish furniture store
  • The cylindrical head has an attractive appearance, which is an advantage in visible applications
