Polycarbonate gray - shockproof UV-resistant

Our polycarbonate gray plastic sheets are available in thicknesses of 5mm and 6mm in an exact millimeter cut. The fine tint of the polycarbonate gray owes the unbreakable plastic glass fine color pigments which extends to the entire strength of the solid plastic sheet. It is therefore not a tinted foil on our PC gray, or a multi-layered plate, or a cellular plate with a thin layer of gray-colored polycarbonate. Our polycarbonate sheets are also provided on both sides with an easily removable protective film, which effectively protects the surfaces and to avoid further scratches before and during further processing.

What is polycarbonate gray?

Polycarobonate Gray is also often called polycarbonate tinted and owes its name to the grayish coloration, which results from the addition of gray, organic color pigments, which dissolve completely during extrusion and causes a clear tint of the otherwise clear, transparent plastic sheet of polycarbonate. The tint has an influence on the light transmission, which also affects the transparency of the plate. The transparency is largely retained, but this decreases more or less depending on the strength. The technical and thermal properties of polycarbonate, are not affected by the gray tint, so that PC gray is considered as shatter-proof plastic, which can be excellent thermally deformed. For example, covers and protective hoods in mechanical engineering are made of gray polycarbonate.

Translucency of polycarbonate gray

The translucency of the tinted polycarbonate depends on the thickness. As the thickness of our polycarbonate gray plastic sheets increases, so does the translucency. This depends on the addition of special, organic color pigments in gray, which gives the actually transparent polycarbonate the gray tint, which reminds of smoked glass.

  • about 48% light transmission at 5mm thickness
  • about 40% light transmission at 6mm thickness

Our polycarbonate gray are weatherproof

Because the gray polycarbonate with its fine tinting is very often used for even terrace roofing or break-resistant glazing, our polycarbonate sheets in gray are UV-stable and weather-resistant, so that they can be easily used indoors and outdoors. Due to its outstanding resistance to breakage, polycarbonate withstands even the heaviest bumps and knocks. Even with large, heavy hailstorm this plastic does not break. The tint also effects that dirtiness of roofing is not as striking in the eye, as it would be the case with clear, transparent roofings. Polycarbonate is only half as heavy as conventional glass, which also has an effect on the substructure, as it does not have to be as stable as in the case of a roof made of real glass.

On request, larger formats of our polycarbonate sheets in gray are also available.

Our polycarbonate sheets in gray are offered as standard only up to a maximum size of 2000mm x 1000mm in the cut. On request, it is also possible for us to supply you with our tinted PC sheets up to a size of 3050mm x 2050mm, because this corresponds to the size in which we use polycarbonate gray as standard in our warehouse. For larger formats shipping costs must be calculated individually in relation to the area and the total weight of the order, so that we can deliver larger blanks only on request.

Application examples for polycarbonate gray

  • Polycarbonate Gray is often used for darkening, break-resistant glazings with a light privacy protection
  • Polycarbonate Gray is weatherproof and hailproof and is therefore ideal for terrace roofs
  • Polycarbonate Gray provides a discreet darkening and is ideal as glazing by strong light
  • Polycarbonate Gray is used in mechanical engineering for break-proof covers and hoods in view areas
  • and many more

Processing of polycarbonate gray

Our polycarbonate gray plastic sheets can be machined using all known machining methods. For example blanks of PC tinted can be edited with a commercial jigsaw or circular saw. Even the milling of contours, bevels and lowerings does not present a particular challenge with the tinted polycarbonate. For drilling holes, a commercially available cordless screwdriver with a simple metal drill is also enough. It should be noted, that polycarbonate has scratch-sensitive surfaces, so it is advisable to be careful and to remove the protective film after processing.

Polycarbonate Gray is a thermoplastic and is therefore perfect for the industrial production of thermoformed parts. With a softening temperature of about 150°C, the deep drawing of simple parts would be possible even in the oven at home. The operating temperature range, at which Polycarbonate Gray can be used, is between -40°C to +120°C.

NOTE: Our tinted polycarbonate sheets are covered on both sides with a protective film to protect the surfaces from scratching. We recommend to remove the protective film only after completion of the processing, because polycarbonate is more sensitive to scratches than acrylic glass.
