What is polyethylene?
Polyethylene is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic and belongs to the polyolefin. PE (polyethylene) is produced from ethylene in a catalytic polymerisation. Because PE is only composed of carbon and hydrogen (polyolefin), it is very non-polar and therefore chemically very inert. Depending on the catalyst and the type of polymerisation, polyethylene is produced in different versions.
The material is milky cloudy in its natural form. PE is the most widely used plastic, accounting for approx. 30%. The largest consumption of PE is generated by the packaging industry. The reason for this is not least the extreme impact strength and food-safe properties of this material.
A basic distinction is made between five types of PE.
- PE-HD where HD stands for ‘high density’.
Here, the molecular chain has few branches.
- PE-LD where LD stands for ‘low density’.
The molecular chain has a high proportion of branching and large branches.
- PE-LLD where LLD stands for ‘linear low density’.
The molecular chain consists of very small branches.
- PE-HMW where HMW stands for ‘high molecular weight’.
PE-HMW consists of long molecular chains with a high molecular weight.
- PE-UHMW where UHMW stands for ‘ultra high molecular weight’.
PE-UHMW consists of very long molecular chains with a very high molecular weight.
Physical characteristics of polyethylene
The most important properties of polyethylene are, on the one hand, very high impact strength and, on the other hand, very good chemical resistance. Furthermore, PE is approved for use in the food sector (food safe).
PE is normally combustible and drips off when burning. The resulting smoke smells strongly of candle wax. PE is normally combustible and drips off when burning. The resulting smoke smells strongly of candle wax.
Scratching the surface of PE (with a fingernail) is used as a quick detection test, because PE is the only hard plastic that can be scratched with a fingernail. The physical density of PE is 0.87 - 0.97 g/cm³, which is lower than the density of water. For this reason, polyethylene floats and does not sink in water.
How is poloyethylene processed?
PE can be processed in all common processing methods such as injection moulding, thermoforming, extrusion, welding, sawing, laser cutting. In most cases, components made of PE are created by welding, because PE can be joined very well by common plastic welding processes.
However, bonding and painting PE pose difficulties due to its high chemical stability. PE can be bonded, but this requires the use of very special adhesives that are suitable for bonding polyethylene, such as our special adhesive PEprofi of our own brand S-Polybond, which was specially developed for bonding polyethylene.
How is polyethylene recycled?
If polyethylene is collected sorted by type, it can be ground and processed into new products or semi-finished products without any problems. However, products made from recycled PE are of lower quality and must therefore be designated as regenerates.

Areas of application for PE sheets
PE sheets are suitable for a variety of applications where material requirements such as high chemical resistance to acids, alkalis or solvents, or high impact strength and no brittle fracture have to be met. Even if a low weight is required, PE sheets with a density below 1g/cm³ are suitable because they are lighter than water. Last but not least, food suitability is also a criterion for the material requirements, which is why PE is also frequently used in the food industry.
The typical areas of application for PE sheets are in apparatus and mechanical engineering, in pond and garden construction or containers for the chemical industry. PE sheets are also used in the construction industry, as concrete protection sheets or as formwork sheets in concrete construction, because the high chemical resistance means that concrete cannot bond with the PE sheets. In this way, very smooth and visually sophisticated concrete surfaces are obtained.
NOTE: The plates themselves are only conditionally suitable for optical purposes due to high scratch sensitivity.
