Our spring rings are made of particularly high-quality A4 stainless steel and are perfectly suited for our balcony screws with M5 thread. We offer these both as a complete set and individually in various colours and thread lengths at favourable graduated prices. The rings are used as additional security for nuts. The increased coefficient of friction of the twisted cut edges prevents the nut from loosening due to shocks and vibrations of the balcony railing or the cladding panel. The outer diameter of 9mm is perfectly matched to 5mm nuts with 8mm spanner size and ensures perfect utilisation of the contact surface between the spring washer and the nut.
NOTE: Our sets consisting of balcony screw, poly washer, washer and self-locking cap nut each also include a spring washer. No spring washer is used with the balcony screw set with threaded sleeve.
The spring washers are primarily used as replacements for loosened cap nuts of balcony bolts and can be ordered individually, like all components of our balcony bolt, which is to be fastened with a cap nut. However, the steel spring rings are basically suitable as screw locks for all threaded screws with M5 thread that are to be tightened with a conventional screw nut or a cap nut and are inserted between a washer and the nut.
Because the spring rings are used for our balcony screws and balconies are located outside a building, the individual components of a fastener for balcony surrounds must be weatherproof and corrosion-resistant. For this reason, we also have our spring rings manufactured only from high-quality stainless steel. The A4 steel alloy used is characterised by a significantly improved acid resistance compared to A2 stainless steel. This means that it can be used for securing screws in all outdoor applications.
The outer diameter of 9mm is perfectly matched to the size of hexagon nuts with M5 thread and a spanner width of 8mm and thus provides a more secure hold of the nut due to an increased coefficient of friction. The higher coefficient of friction is caused by the sharp edges, which are created by cutting the ring and twisting it against each other. The inner hole diameter is 5.3mm and ensures sufficient clearance to slide the spring washers quickly and easily over the thread of an M5 threaded bolt without the spring washer jamming on the thread.
Spring washers are used in a similar way to washers, but serve a different purpose. While a washer is designed to increase the bearing surface of a bolt head or nut to provide better load distribution on the surface, a spring washer is designed to reduce the risk of nuts loosening over time due to vibration. In both cases, these optional fastening aids are placed over the bolt before the nut is tightened. However, there is one very relevant difference. A washer is always placed towards the mounting object. This means that the washer must have direct contact with the surface of the panel, balcony railing or the like. A spring washer only makes sense if it is the last element to be passed over the bolt before the nut is screwed onto the bolt thread. If, instead, the spring washer is placed first, followed by the washer and finally the nut, the effect of higher friction, which is supposed to reduce a nut's self-loosening, would no longer exist.
Due to the sharp, twisted edges of a spring ring, it is absolutely recommended to use a washer between the mounting object or a cladding panel and the spring ring. Otherwise, the ring can scratch the surfaces of the substrate and cause damage to the paint or surfaces of decorative panels. In addition, a washer distributes the loads over a much larger area. A washer made of stainless steel should be used, because with washers made of aluminium, despite the outstanding corrosion resistance, contact corrosion can occur, which is due to a reaction of the two metal alloys.
