HSS-G drill for metal - Extra short version

Manufactured according to DIN 1897 ✓ Profile-ground version ✓ High-quality HSS steel ✓

Our HSS-G twist drills in accordance with DIN 1897 with short drill flutes are suitable for drilling metals such as steel, aluminium, iron, as well as plastics and various other hard materials. They are characterised by a significantly higher torsional strength compared to conventional metal drills. The short drill bits are made from a high-quality high-performance high-speed steel that guarantees a long service life. The drill spiral and drill head are precision ground to achieve greater sharpness. The cross-grinding of the self-centring drill point in particular has the best possible precision, even when used as a spot-weld drill in metal for freehand drilling.

We offer the extra-short metal drill bits made from HSS steel in many sizes at unbeatable prices.

HSS-G drills are slightly more expensive than HSS-R drill bits. The price difference is due to the more complex production process, because in contrast to the roll-rolled drill, which produces almost no excess material during rolling, a ground drill is manufactured from a round blank, in which the flutes are milled out of the round steel and then elaborately ground. However, this also results in a significant increase in quality, so that an HSS-G drill drills with significantly higher precision, especially through hard metals such as alloyed or unalloyed steel, as well as cast steel. Even with aluminium, which we offer in the form of plates and profiles of various designs, the durability, lasting sharpness and precision are noticeable, so that the small additional price ultimately represents a saving.

Scope of delivery:

  • 1 x HSS-G drill DIN 1897 in selected size

NOTE:Before use, a drill should always be checked for damage to the drill head and the cutting edges of the drill spiral. If in doubt, a used drill bit should be replaced with a new, undamaged one to ensure precise drilling without the drill bit jamming.

Properties of the extra short HSS-G drill

The HSS-G drills in accordance with DIN 1897 have precision-ground metal drill bits made from high-quality alloyed high-speed steel, which is characterised by outstanding wear resistance. Ground means that the cutting edges, flutes and drill points of the solid drill bits have been ground with the highest precision, resulting in a significantly higher sharpness compared to the roll-rolled drill bit, which leads to a significant increase in precision in handling as well as in the drill holes themselves. The cross-ground drill tip with a tip angle of 118°, which is typical for metal drills, works its way through the surfaces with extreme precision even in the centre of the drill tip, which is equivalent to a centring tip with self-centring properties. This means that free-hand drilling is also possible without slipping, while at the same time requiring significantly less force and saving a great deal of time when used as a spot weld drill. The cylindrical shank of the drill bit for mounting in the drill chuck has the same diameter on all drill bits as the nominal diameter of the drill bit.

The special feature of the metal drill is its shorter length with a short drill spiral. Like the normal HSS drill to DIN 338, this also has a normal spiral twist of type N, but is significantly shorter in direct comparison. Such drills are usually used to optimise welded joints, which is why this version is often referred to as a spot weld drill. It is certainly not suitable for drilling thick-walled materials. The short overall length is ideal for thin steel sheets, as well as light metal profiles or even aluminium composite panels, as the longer the drill bit, the greater the risk of the drill bit shattering. Even high-quality high-speed steel is no exception here and mainly affects drills in very small nominal diameters. A shorter drill bit, on the other hand, has a higher torsional strength or resistance to twisting. The overall length, as well as the effective length of the drill bit, varies depending on the drill size and increases with increasing diameter.

Drilling with HSS drills

In order to use an HSS drill, a cordless screwdriver or a drill with a drill chuck is required. Column drills with a fixed base are also suitable and even some lathes allow the clamping of a round shank drill. Which type of drill is to be used is generally irrelevant, as long as care is taken to ensure that the impact drilling function is deactivated, if available. Some of these machines are equipped with an automatic coolant supply. Especially when drilling hard metals such as steel, cast steel or grey cast iron, this can be very beneficial and extend the service life of the drill and also allows slightly higher speeds.

Thanks to the cross-ground drill point with a point angle of 118°ree; and the ground cutting edges of the drill spiral, the drill bit glides almost effortlessly through materials such as steel, aluminium, copper, brass or iron, even without special drilling paste or cooling lubricants. In such cases, however, care should be taken to maintain a low speed to minimise heat build-up and ensure that the long service life of the short metal drill bit is not reduced.

However, a low speed to avoid high temperatures at the drill bit and drill hole is not only important for metal. Drilling plastics such as acrylic glass, ABS or polyethylene also delivers better results if the speed is minimised. However, this has nothing to do with the wear of the drill bit. Rather, the material to be drilled is affected here, because if the drill bit is heated too much by the friction, the drill chip melts and, in the worst case, hardens directly outside the drill hole so that it melts into the edge of the drill hole. Particularly with brittle plastics, this can lead to unsightly chipping at the edge of the drill hole and even to cracks or breakage of the plastic sheet. With a special plastic drill bit type HK with an extra wide and elongated spiral, the risk is significantly lower.

Technical data of our profile-ground metal drill

  • Ø Bore hole: From 2,0mm to 9,5mm
  • Drill-Type: Spiral drill
  • Edition: Profile ground
  • Norm: DIN 1897
  • Material: High-performance high-speed steel (HSS)
  • Spiral length: Extra short
  • Admission: Cylindrical shank
  • Direction of rotation: Clockwise
  • Point angle: 118°
  • Spiral twist: N (normal spiral twist)
  • Cut: Cross grinding

We have deliberately chosen application-specific sizes for the nominal diameters of the shortened metal drills, which are primarily used for processing metals, so drills with a diameter of 3.3mm or 4.2mm are ideal for drill holes that are to be further processed into a metric internal thread later using a tap. Other sizes, however, as HSS drill bits with normal spiral length to DIN 338, are also available in our shop at favourable prices.

WARNING:To avoid unnecessarily shortening the service life of the ground HSS drill bit, always ensure that the impact drilling function is deactivated when drilling with an impact drill. Otherwise, the drill bit may be damaged and, in the worst case, become unusable.
