Högert needle-nose pliers with bent tip (IEC 60900)

Protective insulation up to 1000V AC ✓ According to DIN 5745 ✓ Chrome vanadium steel ✓

Our VDE-tested Högert needle nose pliers are combination long-nosed pliers with elongated jaws bent at a 40° angle and a lateral cutting edge. The insulated pliers are available in two different sizes. Both sizes have a rounded, tapered tip with a finely serrated gripping surface. In contrast to the 160mm pliers, the larger flat-nose pliers, with a total length of 200mm, have a straight burner hole with coarse serration. The lateral cutting surface, which is closest to the inserted joint, is present in both versions. The high-quality pliers, which are primarily aimed at craftsmen and DIYers with the highest demands, impress with their excellent workmanship and the highest quality materials. The pliers are made of alloyed chrome-vanadium steel and precision-milled. The pliers jaws, handle surfaces and cutting edges are additionally hardened separately, resulting in a very high Rockwell hardness of 55-60 HRC. This makes the pliers particularly robust and durable, even under the adverse conditions and stresses that are not uncommon in industry or on construction sites.

The two-coloured handles in red and yellow are made of two-component PVC, with a hard red and a soft component in yellow for a comfortable grip. The handles are much more important than the ergonomics of the VDE flat-round nose pliers, however, because they also provide the high level of protection against electrical voltage that is required for pliers manufactured according to DIN EN IEC 60900. This includes, on the one hand, protective insulation up to 1000 volts AC (or 1500 volts DC) and, on the other hand, the particularly pronounced collar shape at the front end of the handle, which prevents slipping and thus contact with the non-insulated gripping jaws.

Features of Högert's insulated needle-nose pliers

As a professional tool in workshop quality, manufacturer Högert relies on precise workmanship and high-quality materials for its VDE needle nose pliers. A two-component PVC handle ensures a comfortable grip. The pliers themselves are made of alloyed chrome-vanadium steel. This is a durable and resilient alloy that can withstand the high stresses of industrial and trade use. The gripping jaws of the bent flat-round pliers, as well as the cutting surface on the side, are extra hardened. With a material hardness of 55-60 HRC (Rockwell hardness), the pointed pliers are not only very good for gripping, bending, guiding and pulling, but also for cutting wires and cables. The 40° bow angle makes the pliers ideal for very precise work, for example in the field of electronics, as the curved tip means that your own hand does not obstruct your view.

The flat-nose pliers have a finely grooved gripping surface in the front, angled area of the gripping jaws. This is followed by a smooth, flat surface, which varies in size depending on the size of the pliers, and is suitable for crimping sleeves and terminals. For the best possible power transmission, the side cutter with faceted cutting edge and very low wading, is closest to the inserted joint and ensures cutting of copper, aluminium, plastic and much more with little effort. The cutting surface is also slightly smaller on the smaller pliers due to their more compact design. In addition, the small pointed nose pliers do not have a flat burner hole, unlike the large version. This is for a more powerful and firm grip and is provided with coarse serration. The larger handle ensures precise dosing with optimal power transmission for gripping and holding.

Our VDE needle nose pliers, like our simple long nose pliers, are made of chrome-vanadium-alloy steel. Due to the specific design of the gripping jaws, both variants are subject to the DIN 5745 standard for gripping and cutting pliers. The main difference lies in the handles, which are made of a multi-component PVC in the case of the VDE needle nose pliers and have a broad collar. The handles, typically coloured in yellow and red for VDE tools, ensure very good protection against electric shock and guarantee adequate insulation against voltages up to 1,000 V AC (or 1,500 V DC) and thus comply with the VDE according to DIN EN IEC 60900. This standard applies to insulated hand tools for use on or near live parts at nominal voltages up to 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC.

Use and care of bent flat-round nose pliers

The VDE-tested long nose pliers are ideal for all applications in which work is carried out on or near live components. The bent tip makes working a little easier than with straight-tipped pliers, because your own hand does not restrict your view, which is particularly useful in applications where precision and care are required. Typical examples are soldering work and measurements on printed circuit boards that have to be carried out under voltage. Even in the house connection box, a voltage-free state is not always given, so that the laying of further supply lines requires the highest concentration and tools that are sufficiently insulated against mains voltage. The same applies to control cabinets of large production plants. The fine tip with a slightly grooved gripping surface makes it easy to grasp wires and individual conductors and guide them precisely into the required position. The insulated pliers also make it easy to bend the wires for a visually neat wiring. An integrated side cutter is used to cut the cables to length, eliminating the need to change tools.

The long, curved tip is rounded on the outside of the jaws and becomes thinner and thinner towards the tip. This makes the pliers perfect for bending stripped individual wires into eyelets of different sizes, for example. In addition, the fine tip is also suitable for very delicate work where conventional combination pliers with wide jaws would struggle. The large pliers also have a coarsely serrated burner hole, which is excellently suited for loosening tight screw connections and ensures a secure, firm hold. This can be a great advantage, for example, when pulling cable ends through a pipe, but also for fixing metal rods and pipes that are to be welded or soldered. However, the serration is quite sharp-edged, so care must be taken with sensitive surfaces. Placing a soft cloth between the object and the pliers can prevent damage.

NOTE:The small version is ideal for electronic components due to the significantly more compact dimensions, which are also usually very small. The size and length of the 200mm VDE pliers are ideal for wiring in the field of plant and domestic electrics. For example, for connecting supply lines to the miniature circuit breakers in the fuse box, or for risk-free wiring of plug sockets, lamps and switches, as well as low-lying junction boxes.

When wiring, soldering and bending wires and thin sheets, the combination of pointed pliers for gripping, rounded outer sides for bending and diagonal cutters for cutting and shortening is ideal. Popular for hobbyists, rounded needle-nose pliers are used, for example, to remove support structures in 3D printing, in jewellery making, in model making or in shaping bonsai plants with a fine wire. While these admittedly unusual hobbies do not require handles with protective insulation according to IEC 60900, the large moulded collars do contribute to improved handling.

Examples of use of the bent VDE needle nose pliers

  • The bent tip makes it easier to position electronic components on PCBs
  • The angled flat round tip makes it easier to connect cables in fuse boxes
  • The insulated pliers enable wiring within live electrical systems
  • The rounded outer side is perfect for bending eyelets for wiring with screw terminals
  • The large VDE flat-round pliers can also be used as a side cutter replacement for cables

WARNING: Our bent VDE needle nose pliers with multi-component handles made of highly insulating PVC in red-yellow are bent in accordance with DIN 5745, in contrast to the needle nose pliers and also suitable for live working up to 1,000 V AC.
